11 farmers commit suicide in Vidarbhha in three days

Nagpur, July 27 (UNI) Eleven debt-ridden farmers in different districts of Vidarbha have allegedly committed suicide in the last three days, even as the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) is reviewing relief package to the farmers.

A report reaching here today said four farmers committed suicide in Yavatmal district, three in Akola and two each in Wardha and Buldhana district.

Four farmers from Yavatmal - Ganesh Waman Chandure from Kalamb village, Gajanan Keshaav Dhoke from Vegoan, Devidas Nilkand Kudmethe from Zari village and Krishnaji Tukaram Salam from Nandura-Khurd village - committed suicide as they could not repay their loans worth Rs 32,000, Rs 35,000, Rs 15,600 and Rs 23,000, respectively.

Besides, farmers - Shyamrao Hiraman Hiwarkar from Tulanga, Ganesh ramchandra Mahaturkar and Kailash Punjaji Choudhari from Akola ended their lives as they were unable to repay bank loans of Rs 35,000, Rs 24,000 and Rs 18,000, respectively.

Besides, two women - Santosh Patiba Jadhav and Bebibai Gajanan Deshmukh from Sonaj village in Buldhana district committed suicide as they could not find any source to repay bank loans of Rs 1.34 lakh and Rs 2.40 lakh, respectively. Also, unable to repay their loans worth Rs 89,000 and Rs 31,000, respectively, Babaurao Bhanjudas Rajurkar and Nemichand Bhagwan Agarkar took the extreme step.

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh had announced a relilef package of Rs 3,750 crore during his visit to Vidarbha on July one.

Even after that, a total of 76 farmers have reportedly committed suicide in Vidarbha, according to statistics maintained by NGO Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti.
