Vijayawada postal region targets Rs 1000 crore on rural savings

Vijayawada, Jul 26 (UNI) The Vijayawada region of Postal department has targetted Rs 1000 crore through rural postal savings in the current fiscal 2006-07 as against Rs 558 crore achieved during the last financial year, Post-Master General B V Sudhakar said today.

Addressing a press conference here after launching 'logistic post' daily service between Vijayawada and Guntur, he said this service would be extended between Guntur and Ongole, Ongole and Nellore, Nellore and Gudur and Gudur-Chennai.

The department has planned to modernise 32 head post offices and fully computerise them in six districts - Krishna, Khammam, Guntur, Prakasham, Nellore and West Godavari in the region, he added.

The Vijayawada head post office would be linked with 14 sub-offices to facilitate withdrawing and depositing money in any post office in the region.

Of the 32 head post offices, 23 had completed the process of computerisation and 72 sub-offices were being modernised, he said.

The department was holding talks with the railway authorities to issue railway tickets through post office located on the outskirts, he said and adding that the process would be completed in two months. He said the International money transfer service received good response from the public. About 24,000, people were using the facility.

The department was contemplating to introduce new services like 'e-seva centres' for collecting telephone bills,current bills and IT returns, he said.
