Students form human chains to mark deluge anniversary in Mumbai
Mumbai, July 26 (UNI) Students from various schools across the city today formed human chains in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the deluge here last year.
In the event, organised by 'Vote Mumbai' campaigners along with Rotary Club of Mumbai South&West Ward, Citizens Trust (West Federation), students formed a chain in South Mumbai and ran from Churchgate station all the way to Mantralaya, while a second chain was formed in Western suburbs along the S V road and ran from Bandra Flyover up to Milan subway at Santa Cruz.
Accompanied by their teachers and Vote Mumbai volunteers, 4,000 schoolchildren highlighted various problems associated with the city and need for better governance in Mumbai. Placards, hoardings and banners sported messages by the students, informing Mumbaikars of their fundamental rights to a safe, clean and modern Mumbai.
Student representatives from each of the two groups handed over a plaque bearing solutions to a representative of the Chief Minister at Mantralaya.
Vote Mumbai coordinator Anant Shende said, ''The events of 26th July 2005 only confirmed that there was something seriously wrong with the 'system' of governance and is in urgent need of an overhaul. The system should make the executive responsible and accountable.'' UNI GVS GK PK PM2303
