Lapang meets Sonia Gandhi

New Delhi, July 26 (UNI) Former Meghalaya Chief Minister D D Lapang, heading a 22-member Congress Legislative Party delegation, today met Congress President Sonia Gandhi here.

According to sources, Mrs Gandhi after listening to the latest political development, gave her consent for the change in leadership. Congress Chief of North East Oscar Fernandes was also present.

It is also learnt the Bharatiya Janata Party and Nationalist Congress Party legislators were trying to form an alternative government in Meghalaya. There is also a fear of a split in the Congress party in the state and this is the reason the party high command agreed for the change in leadership.

Mr Lapang is expected to take over as the Chief Minister on July 28, sources added.
