Jamia proctor resigns to facilitate Inquiry

New Delhi, July 26 (UNI) Despite Jamia Millia Islamia proctor Rocket Ibrahim resigning, agitating university students tonight decided to continue with their indefinite hunger strike till an FIR against them was withdrawn and admission applications of all ''genuine'' students were reconsidered.

''The proctor's resignation is a positive response to our demands but it should have come earlier. But we will continue with our fast unto death till the FIR against six students, including Jamia students' union president Shams Pervez, is withdrawn,'' students' union leader Satyaprakash Mishra told UNI after an emergency meeting of the union.

He said the university management must ''properly consider'' admission applications of genuine students. ''Justice must be done to all the students and their academic session should not go waste.

We are not talking about the restigated students but only the once who are seriously pursuing their degrees,'' he added.

Three Jamia students have been on a fast unto death since thursday, demanding vice chancellor Mushirul Hassan's resignation, legal action against Rocket Ibrahim and his son Ejas and immediate commencement of the entire academic session in the university, which has been closed sine die since July 19.

Mr Ibrahim today stepped down from his office in order to Facilitate the inquiry into the violent incidents that rocked the university on July 18.

The Vice-Chancellor accepted his resignation and appointed Prof Masood Alam in his place, a statement said.
