Introduce bill to obtain 50 p c seats in Pvt Med Coll: AIADMK

Pondicherry, July 26 (UNI) The AIADMK in Pondicherry has urged the administration to introduce and pass a bill in the budget session of the territorial Assembly beginning here tomorrow, paving way to obtain 50 per cent seats in private medical colleges here.

A delegation of the AIADMK led by state secretary A Anbazhagan MLA, comprising legislators, councillors and office-bearers today called on Lt Governor Mukut Mithi and submitted a memorandum, in which the party alleged that the subsequent DMK and Congress governments had 'cheated' the students on the admission issue.

Though an agreement was signed to provide 50 per cent of the seats in the private medical colleges at the time of granting No Objection Certificate (NOC), it was not being implemented, the memorandum noted.

When neighbouring states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala were getting 65 per cent seats and Kerala enacting a legislation in this regard, Pondicherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy had unilaterally held a discussion with the management of seven medical colleges here and obtained different percentages in various colleges which cannot be justified, the party said in the memorandum.

Pointing out that the private colleges were collecting more fees, the AIADMK demanded that the fees should be on par with neighbouring states.

Demanding introduction of the bill, the AIADMK was of the opinion that if it was implemented, the government would get 475 medical seats to be filled in with students selected through the centralised admission committee.
