Indian woman cager making waves Down Under
New Delhi, July 26 (UNI) First Indian woman basketballer to figure in the Australian league, Geethu Anna Jose is making waves for her side Ringwood, drawing rich praise from coach Tim Mottin.
''Geethu has natural raw talent as a basketballer and is quite athletic for a tall girl. She is easy to coach as she wants to learn, and she picks things up quickly. She has a great inside jump shot,'' observed Mottin, the newly appointed Head Coach of Ringwood Basketball Womens Division.
SportzIndia Management has been instrumental behind facilitating Geethu's Australia stint and country's top woman cager is making the best use of this rare oppurtunity and continues to take the Australian BigV League by storm with her sterling performance game after game.
Playing in her 6th game during the weekend after she joined the Ringwood Womens team at the fag end in the V-League Division 2 in Melbourne, Geethu has already scored 133 points averaging 22.83 points per game.
Her highest score so far had been in her last match against Altona scoring a whopping 33 points overshadowing an impressive tally of 31 points in her 4th match against Sherbrooke to ensure her teams victory in both games.
''This is the first time that a women's Basketball player from India is participating in a Women's League in Australia and perhaps the first opportunity for a girl from Kerala and SportzIndia is definitely proud to be a part of this. Geethu's performance, personality and attitude in Australia is a positive step for women's basketball in India , and future opportunities for other basketballers,'' R Anil Kumar, Country Headof SportzIndia said in a release today.
Geethu's team Ringwood, however, has a long way to go and is placed seventh in the League, having lost 10 of the 20 games.
SportzIndia has entered into an understanding with MOKPOK International Pte Ltd, Melbourne to create more openings for such ventures to help women players in India gain better training and League play with the active support of the Ringwood Basketball Association, the release said.
With the Harlem Globetrotter games in November expected to create the much needed hype for the game in India, SportzIndia had earlier been instrumental in coordinating the NBA Legends clinic by 10 time NBA Houston Rockets Star Robert Reid during the Junior National Basketball Championships at Ludhiana last month.
