Indian leaders in Nepal to support democracy
Kathmandu, July 26: A 22 member multi-party Indian delegation, led by National Congress Party general secretary, Devi Prasad Tripathi, arrived in Nepal via Kakadbhitta in eastern Nepal.
"As Nepal has already made impressive strides along the path of progress and prosperity, India can't remain a mere spectator and not assist its neighbour," The Kathmandu Post quoted Mr Tripathi as saying.
''Our main aim is to strengthen Loktantra in Nepal,''he said.
"We have embarked on this tour to further consolidate unity among Nepalese," he said.
"Although the Nepalese have won the battle against the exploitation that was prevalent for over 250 years, the major fight against hunger, deprivation and poverty still lies ahead," said Mohan Prakash of Indian National Congress. "We have come to help you in this." "Situation of Nepal is just like that of the time when India was freed from the British in 1947," Mr Prakash added.
Former foreign minister and Nepali Congress leader, Chakra Banstola and regional bureau chief of CPN (Maoist) for Mechi-Koshi, Gaurishankar Khadka, were present to welcome them.
The team comprises Shivaraj Singh of the Janata Dal (United), Pankaj Chaudhary of the Bharatiya Janata Party, senior journalist Ananda Swarup Verma, among others.
