Heavy rains in capital bring down mercury to 28.2 degrees Celsius

New Delhi, July 26 (UNI) Heavy rains lashed the capital and lowered the temperatures by several degrees.

With 64.3 mm of rainfall already recorded till 2030 hours, the capital in the recorded the highest rainfall in a day ever since the South West monsoon hit Delhi in the second week of July.

The showers, which began at around 0900 hours, kept the people of Delhi ensconsed in their homes and offices throughout the day, with the capital witnessing a burst of heavy rainfall towards the evening.

The rainfall led to a tremendous drop in the mercury with the maximum temperature plummeting to 28.2 degrees Celsius, six degrees below normal.

The minimum temperature was recorded at 27.1 degrees Celsius, the same as yesterday.

With today's rainfall, the capital has experienced about 106 mm of rainfall since yesterday morning.

The coming days could bring more rains to the capital with the weatherman forecasting a generally cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain and thundershowers with the likelihood of heavy showers in some areas in the next 24 hours.

Infact the coming days could witness an increase in rainfall activity in North West India.

''The axis of monsoon trough passes through Anupgarh, Agra, Varanasi, Dhanbad, Hazaribagh, Sagar Islands and thence southeastwards.

Heavy to very heavy rains is likely to continue over Western Himalayan Region, plains of northwest India and Gangetic plains in the next few days, the met office said.
