New Delhi, July 26: The rain gods today showered their bounty on Delhiites with the capital witnessing the heaviest rainfall of the Monsoon season.

The rainfall, however, brough with it the usual problems of waterlogging and traffic jams.

The capital recorded nearly 90 mm of rainfall till 2330 hours, the highest rainfall recorded in a single day ever since the South West monsoon hit Delhi in the second week of July.

The showers, which began at around 0900 hours, kept the people of Delhi ensconsed in their homes and offices throughout the day. In fact, after showers during the day, the capital was lashed by another spell of heavy rainfall towards the evening.

The heavy rainfall in the evening resulted in waterlogging in several areas, leading to traffic jams at several major intersections.

The rainfall led to a tremendous drop in the mercury with the maximum temperature plummeting to 28.2 degrees Celsius, six degrees below normal.

The minimum temperature was recorded at 27.1 degrees Celsius, the same as yesterday.

With today's rainfall, the capital has experienced about 125 mm of rainfall since yesterday morning.

Tomorrow could bring more heavy rains to the capital with the weathermen forecasting a generally cloudy sky with a few more spells of rain and thundershowers with the likelihood of heavy showers in some areas in the next 24 hours.

In fact, the coming days could witness an increase in rainfall activity in North West India.

''The axis of monsoon trough passes through Anupgarh, Agra, Varanasi, Dhanbad, Hazaribagh, Sagar Islands and thence southeastwards.

Enhanced rainfall activity with heavy to very heavy falls is likely to continue over Western Himalayan Region, plains of northwest India and Gangetic plains in the next few days, the met office said.
