Film on Kamala Suraiyya

Kozhikode, Kerala, July 26 (UNI) A documentary film on the life of the famous and controversial Indian writer Kamala Suraiyya would be shown in various parts of the country and at Frankfurt.

Talking to newspersons prior to the premiere of the film, well known documentary maker Suresh Kohli said, the film 'Kamala Das, an Introduction' would be screened at Kochi today and in New Delhi and Thiruvananthapuram in the first and third weeks of August respectively. It would also be shown at Frankfurt in the first week of October, on the side lines of Frankfurt Book Festival, he added.

Later, the film would be telecast on Doordarshan and then it would be given for sale, he said.

Mr Kohli said he took special attention to give an authentic account of the literary life of the writer, who had won many awards and honours for her writing in English and Malayalam.

She herself went through the script and saw the documentary, he said. However, other aspects of her life, including the controversy regarding her conversion to Islam was not included in the 28-minute film, he added.

The film, sponsored by Central Sahitya Akademi (CSA), also showcases inputs given by former CSA secretary K Sachitanandan, Prof V C Harris, poet A K Daruwala, writer Namita Gokhale and Canadian biographer Merrily Wiesbordy, who has writter biography of Das.
