A top state Congress leader to sit on fast unto death
Hardwar, July 26 (UNI) A top Uttaranchal Congress leader has said that he would undertake fast unto death from August 25, in front of the residence of Congress President Sonia Gandhi if the bill for changing the name of the state from 'Uttaranchal' to 'Uttarakhand' was not introduced in the current session of the Parliament.
The general secretary of the state Congress and the vice president of the Rajya Nirman Andolankari Kalyan Parishad (in the rank of a minister of state), Dhirendra Pratap said this while talking to the media persons at Roorkee last evening.
Mr Pratap said that changing the name of the state from 'Uttaranchal' to 'Uttarakhand' was a part of the Congress manifesto in the last assembly elections. ''The people of the state have emotional attachment with the word 'Uttarakhand' and the entire agitation for a separate state was for the creation of 'Uttarakhand','' he added. He further said that it was the duty of the party to honour the sentiments of the fighters for the creation of the state.
