73 Coastal police stations to be set up
New Delhi, July 26 (UNI) The government proposes to set up 73 coastal police stations under the Coastal Security Scheme and provide Rs 151 crore for the training of police personnel and expenditure on fuel, repairs and maintenance of boats.
Minister of State for Home S Reghupathy told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply that of the 73 coastal police stations, 10 would be established in Gujarat, 12 in Maharashtra, 3 in Goa, 5 in Karnataka, 8 in Kerala, 12 in Tamil Nadu, 6 in Andhra Pradesh, 5 in Orissa, 6 in West Bengal, one in Pondicherry, 4 in Lakshadweep and one in Daman and Diu.
He said expenditure on fuel, repairs and maintenance of boats and training of marine police for a period of 5 years is estimated to be Rs. 151 crore for all the States/Union Territories covered under the Scheme. In addition, the expenditure on the police stations would also include manpower to be sanctioned by the State Governments.
Under the Scheme, assistance is given to the Coastal States and Union Territories to set up coastal police stations equipped with boats and vehicles for mobility along the coastline and in the close coastal waters.
Recurring expenditure for a period of 5 years on fuel, repairs and maintenance of the boats provided, is also met by the Union Government, while manpower is provided by the state governments, he added.
