US says, disappointed over failure of Doha Round
New Delhi, July 25 (UNI) Expressing disappointment over the failure of WTO talks in Geneva, the United States today said it remains committed to a successful Doha Round, which creates real market openings for all WTO member countries.
''The US is disappointed that the G6 was not able to reach an agreement on the Doha Round,'' Charge d' Affaires of the US Embassy in India Geoffrey Pyatt here at a meeting of the American Chamber of Commerce.
''We went to Geneva prepared to reach an agreement that would benefit all economies and lead to a significant reduction in poverty around the world,'' he said, adding, ''We regret that the G8 mandate for increased market access has not been met.'' He said the US will not give up with the failure of Doha Round, and added that it believes the negotiations can begin again and produce a successful outcome.
''The US remains committed to a successful Doha Round, one that creates real market openings that brings new economic oppurtunities and opens markets for all WTO member countries.'' President George W Bush had repeatedly said that the US was ready to eliminate tarrifs, trade-distorting subsidies and other barriers to the free flow of goods and services as other nations do the same, Mr Pyatt further added.
Focusing on the economic and trade issues, he said US-India trade as ''robust'' and pointed out that bilateral trade is on the track for 21 per cent growth this year.
On the Indo-US civilian nuclear agreement, he expressed hope that the US Congress would approve the legislation in the near future, saying, ''the deal reflected the strong political commitments by the two governments to turn nuclear power into an area of collaboration that addresses real energy needs.
