Thousands of people take holy dip in river Cauvery

Tiruchirapalli, July 24 (UNI) Thousands of people took a holy dip in river Cauvery and homage to their beloved ancestors on the occasion of ''Aadi Amaavasai,'' (a holy day for Hindus) today.

At the famed Ammamandapam bathing ghats on the bank of river Cauvery near Srirangam, scores of people performed rituals with the assistance of vedic priests and offered prayers, fruits, fresh vegetables and rice to their ancestors to pay their respects.

Aadi Amaavasai was also celebrated in a traditional manner in the Cauvery-flowing districts of Tami-Nadu.

People in large numbers congregated on the banks of river Cauvery on the occasion.
