STEP comes to aid of vendors

Guwahati, Jul 24 (UNI) The Society for Social Transformation and Environmental Protection (STEP), a developmental body, today organised a public awareness programme regarding right to livelihood of vendors in the city.

STEP appealed to the state government to introduce a policy for vendors on the lines of the national policy of 2004, aimed at combating poverty and reducing vulnerability of the marginalised sections of the society.

Today's campaign, organised in association with the Ulubari chapter of the Greater Guwahati Women Vegetable Vendors, envisaged support for poor section of the city to help them exercise their rights by organising them and providing health and emergency support.

The organisation sought public suggestions by distributing objective-type questionnaires on eviction of street markets without making alternative arrangements and awareness about the National Policy of Vendors, 2004.

Similar programmes would be held in other parts of the city soon.
