People throng Collectorate following rumour

Villupuram, Tamil Nadu, July 24 (UNI) Tension prevailed near the Collectorate area here today as more than 9000 people assembled there following rumours that application for the provision of free land was being collected at the Collectorate.

According to police, people from different parts of the district, nostly members of the sel-help groups (SHGs) came to the collectorate after rumours spread that applications for allocation of free land were being collected at the collectorate.

Following this, a strong police force was posted to maintain law and order.

The sudden rush of people put the authorities in a fix as they feared that the issue might be politicised if they refused to accept the applications.
