Nehru issue leads to walkout in MP Assy
Bhopal, July 24 (UNI) The opposition staged a walkout in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly today amidst pandemonium over the issue of deletion of lessons, on India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru and his wife Kamla, from school syllabi.
Mr Arif Akil (Cong) raised the matter during question hour and even as members protested, School Education Minister Narottam Mishra made it clear that about ten lessons were deleted and the decision followed a special committee's recommendation.
''The Supreme Court has stressed on teaching environment-related lessons in primary classes and such lessons were incorporated.
'Aakhri Wasiyat' (The Last Will), a lesson relating to Pandit Nehru, has actually been added. The committee report was received On January 24 and the decision taken a month later,'' he explained.
Dissatisfied over the reply, Congress legislators trooped into the well and began raising slogans in front of Speaker Ishwardas Rohani. Heated exchanges took place with the treasury benches.
''The government is not providing a proper response,'' said Leader of the Opposition Jamuna Devi who announced the walkout.
Congress MLAs were accompanied by Mr Saroj Bachchan Nayak (JD-U) and Dr Sunilam (SP).
