Moily panel approves interim report, to submit to PM im next few day
New Delhi, July 24 (UNI) The Oversight Committee, formed to prepare a roadmap for implementation of 27 per cent reservation for OBCs in institutes of higher education from next year, today approved an interim report which will be presented to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the next few days.
Chairman of the Committee Veerappa Moily told reporters here that the draft interim report was presented before the the Oversight Committee which approved it with some changes.
Mr Moily, a former Karnataka Chief Minister, said the Committee has suggested that an 'Empowerment Committee' should be set up in each of the institutes, where reservation is to be implemented, so that these institutes could spell out their requirements regarding infrastructure and finance etc.
Replying to a question over the protest expressed by IITs and IIMs implement reservation in one go in view of the lack of faculty and infrastructure and said, he said every sub-group of the Committee was of the view that it was possible to implement reservation from the next academic year.
The sub-groups had been set up on technological and engineering institutions, management institutions, Central universities, medical and agricultural institutes to provide inputs to the Committee to help it in its task.
Mr Moily said an interim report had become a must in view of the very short time left for implementing the reservation and a number of important decisions were to be taken.
Replying to another question, Mr Moily said the committee has asked for a detailed project report from each institute and suggested five to ten per cent of funds required for the expansion could be released immediately to each institute for making arrangements for implementing the decision.
He said the committee was trying for a 54 per cent increase in seats in the institutions to ensure 27 per cent reservation for OBCs without harming the interest of meritorious students.
