India go down fighting against Hong Kong

Bangalore, July 24 (UNI) In a dissapointing start hosts India went down fighting to Hong Kong 28-38 in the opening match of the inaugural match of the Fifth Asian youth (Under 21) Netball Championship being played in the Kanteerava Indoor Stadium here today.

In the Group A encounter, Hong Kong led throughout but Indians made a brave bid to bridge the gap in the third quarter, however goal scorer Zara Hann who scored 25 points proved tough to counter as she took her team to a convincing win. Goal attacker Christina Bailey (13) was the other star performer for Hong Kong.

For India Goal Attacker Preethi Buchar was in limelight scoring 11 points.

Visitors had the upper hand right from the beginning. After gaining three point lead in the first quarter (10-7), they increased the margin to seven (21-14) in the secnd. India's Parameshwari defended well to keep the lead in manageable proportions at 22-29 in the third but with Zara in fine touch as she helped her team to a of 10 points lead at the finish.

In all Seven countries, including holders Sri Lanka, last year runners up Malaysia, Hong Kong, Maldives, Thailand besides India are participating in the tournament played on league cum knockout basis.

India play Sri Lanka in their second match tomorrow.
