New Delhi, July 24 (UNI) The BJP today used bells, cymbals and gongs to make the UPA face the music for its alleged 'apathy' towards spiralling prices and shortage of essential commodities.

The opposition party conducted a nationwide 'Ghanta Naad' (bell ringing) protest in 1,000 cities and towns, including all state capitals, district towns and tehsils, between 1100 to 1130 hours. BJP activists rang bells and struck cymbals, gongs and even stainless steel dinner plates in a high decibel demonstration aimed at "awakening the government to the seriousness of the situation." BJP president Rajnath Singh and senior leaders, who had accompanied other NDA constituents to meet President A P J Abdul Kalam this morning to urge him to seek the opinion of Supreme Court on the government's move to pass the Office of Profit Bill in its present form, rang bells outside the Rashtrapati Bhawan precincts, accompanied by clashing of cymbals by party activists. BJP Spokesman Vijay Kumar Malhotra said the BJP workers had organised such 'Ghanta Naad' and 'Thali Bajana' programmes throughout the country today, as the second phase of the party's agitation against steep rises in prices of essential commodities.
