Three pilgrims killed in road accident in Haryana

Jagadhri, July 23 (UNI) Three Kanwarias(piligrims) returning from Hardwar were killed and 18 others injured when a jeep in which they were traveling rammed into a tanker near Kalanaur village on the Hardwar-Kurukshtera highway this morning, police said.

According to the police, the pilgrims were returning to their village, Kamoda in Kurukshetra village, when their jeep collided head-on with the oncoming tanker. Two of the pilgrims died on the spot while the third died on way to the civil hospital here.

The deceased were identified as Sita Ram, Dalbir and Raju. All the injured were admitted to the local civil hospital.

Police said soon after the mishap, a group of residents of near-by villages blocked the highway. Stones were pelted at the police force that reached the spot to take stock of the situation.

The police had to restore to a mild lathicharge to clear the highway and restore traffic.

The police have registered a case against the tanker driver, who is absconding.
