Lakhs of nominations received for panchayat polls in AP

Hyderabad, July 20(UNI)In an unprecedented response, lakhs of nominations were filed for the Panchayat polls after the deadline for filing of nominations closed yesterday.

For the 21,807 Sarpanch posts, 78,701 nominations were filed by July 18. For the 2,13,224 wards, 2,71,106 nominations were filed by the same day. The final tally was being computed as filing of nominations was on a massive scale on the last day yesterday.

Scrutiny of nominations was being held today and candidates would have to appeal on rejections by Friday. The appeals would be heard and resolved on July 21. The deadline for withdrawal of nominations would be till the afternoon of Saturday.

The first phase of elections would be held on July 29 and the second and third stages on August 2 and 6 respectively.
