SC angry over MLAs making derogatory remarks agianst judges

New Delhi, July 19 (UNI) The Supreme Court today expressed anguish over the politicians making derogatory statements against the judges on the floor of the House.

The Supreme Court made the observation in response to the statement of JD (S) MLA Rajanna on the floor of the Karnataka state asssembly on July 4, in which the MLA had cast aspersions on the integrity of Judges, hearing the Bangalore Mysore Express Highway case.

The ruling Party MLA in the state had reportedly said the sitting Supreme Court judges, keeping in view their retirement, will render their judgement in favour of the company and after their retirement will become its director.

Rajanna also cited the statement of former Chief Justice of India Bharucha saying that ten per cent judicial officers in the country were corrupt.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Y K Sabharwal, Mr Justice C K Thakker and Mr Justice P K Balasubramanyan made the observation when the statement of the MLA was brought to the notice of the court.

Senior counsel Dushwant Dave also pleaded his petitions for urgent hearing seeking stay against the judicial inquiry ordered by the Karnataka Government against the contractor.

Dave also mentioned the petition seeking to initiate contempt of court proceeding against the respondents including Karnataka for not implementing the court's order giving green signal to the project.

It may be noted here that the Supreme court had earlier imposed an exemplary cost of Rs five lakhs on Karnataka for filing frivolous appeal in the case. The court had also imposed a cost of Rs 50,000 on a ruling party MLA.

Eight new townships are to be developed along the Bangalore Mysore express highway.

Former Prime MInister H D Devegowda and his son, the then Public Work Department Minister Ravanna, have been under cloud for creating hurdles in the way of the completion of the project worth Rs 2, 250 cr.

According to the present state government, the previous government had acquired a land in excess of requirement and handed over 2,450 acres of excess land to M/s Nandi infrastructure corridor enterprises (NICE) which was indulging in real estate business to make huge illegal profits. The land belonged to the farmers and the weaker sections of the society.

The SC will hear the case on Friday.
