Normalcy at Indo Myanmar border
Imphal, Jul 19: After four days of stir following alleged assault on civilians by Assam Rifles personnel, traffic movements has been restored at Moreh, the trading border town at Manipur.
International trade between India and Myanmar was affected due to a stir in the town to protest the alleged assault of civilians including Myanmar citizens by Assam Rifles (AR) troops stationed at the town.
Meanwhile, the All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) and the Assam Rifles have also resolved the impasse. The media fraternity had opposed the refusal of the AR troops to gather news about the incident.
Members of the Standing committee of the Union led by President K Bijoy discussed the issue with the journalists at the border town, about 110 km from Imphal. The AWMJU team also discussed the matter with senior AR officials.
Assam Rifles authority expressed regret and the indefinite Moreh bandh called by All Moreh Apunba Meira Paibi Lup was called off.
A joint meeting was held yesterday at Moreh in which state health minister D K Korunthang, MLA K Bijoy, AR officials and local civil organisations participated.
Traffic movements has been restored at national highway no 39 and at Gate no 2, where Indian and Myanmar citizens are allowed to cross over to the other side for marketing purposes during day time.
