'Modi tried to incite communal passions in Mumbai'

New Delhi, July 19: The Congress today charged Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi with inciting communal passion by addressing a rally in Mumbai following the serial blasts in the metro polis on July 11.

''While the entire nation came together as one to pay homage to our collective loss, one party and one man started the ugly business of trying to reap political benefits out of grief, sorrow and suffering,''Congress spokesperson Jayanti Natrajan said.

She alleged that Mr Modi wanted to derive political mileage out of this rally for the forthcoming Mumbai Municipal elections.

She accused Mr Modi of having come to power ''by shamelessly exploiting the dead bodies and Godhara tragedy''.

''When the nation has been stuck by a national tragedy and the President, the Prime Minster, the Congress president and other responsbile leaders and citizens were trying to bring releif and succour to the victims, Mr Modi was making the situation worse by addressing public rally in a bid to incite communal passions, Ms Natrajan said.

She criticised Mr Modi for his alleged remarks where he had charged Prime Minister Manhmohan Singh with inaction.

''Did Mr Modi expect the Prime Minister and the Maharashtra Government to launch a genocide like he did in Gujarat after the Godhara carnage. Is it his problem that the Maharashtra Government did not aid and abet rioting, looting, pillage, rape, arson and genocide in the same way that the Gujarat Government did under his leadership,''she added.

She said the Congress calls upon the people to reject all attempts to divide them on communal grounds. ''The citizens of this country would not fall prey to the evil desings of political opportunists like Narendra Modi who play poliltics over dead bodies and tragedy, the party spokesman said.
