Jamia University 'closed' due to violence
New Delhi, July 19 (UNI) The Jamia Milia Islamia University was indefinitely closed today as a precautionary measure after violence in the campus yesterday.
''The Vice Chancellor Mushirul Hassan has given the order that the University will remain closed still further orders in view of the prevailing situation after yesterday's violence, in which some people went on a rampage and damaged Jamia property and some vehicles. They even barged into the Vice Chancellor's office,'' University spokesperson Rakshanada Jaleel said.
However, some students claimed that University staff and security personnel tried to attack them when they tried to meet the Vice Chancellor.
Denying the allegation, Ms Jaleel said the students could have been injured in a clash of two rival gangs of the university and the staff was not involved in it.
She said management denied admissions to some people as they were found to be ''trouble makers''.
''We have denied admissions to some people and we don't want them as part of the university because they are 'trouble makers'. This is the University's effort to improve discipline in the campus,'' she added.
Student Union president Shams Pervez yesterday claimed that he had been allegedly beaten up by ''goons of the university registrar Afzal, while protesting against the malpractices being carried out at the official's behest.'' ''He was admitted to the hospital with serious injuries after about half a dozen alleged goons of the registrar, beat him up when he was trying to stage a sit-in in front of his office last evening,'' sources said.
The student Union Leader was reportedly protesting against 'politically motivated steps' of the registrar in failing those in the exam who were his supporters.
Later, his supporters pelted stones at the registrar's office.
Meanwhile, police reached the scene and brought the situation under control.
