Govt to collect more tax at border

Aizawl, July 19: After attaining huge revenue from the Value Added Tax (VAT) this year, the Mizoram government has further decided to collect systematic taxes on all items, especially coming from outside state, by setting up taxation checkgates across all border areas.

Talking to UNI, state taxation commissioner TBC Rozara stated that his department has so far established three checkgates, which are located in Vairengte near Asom-Mizoram border, Lengpui Airport and Melbuk near Indo-Myanmar border at Champhai district and the fourth one would be shortly set up at Tlabung, which is also on the Indo-Myanmar border in south Mizoram.

Asserting the importance of setting up taxation checkgates, Mr Rozara said that all goods entering Mizoram would now be systematically recorded.

All the taxation checkgates, headed by a tax superintendent would keep strict vigil on all incoming and outgoing goods which passes through the gate and has valid documents, he said, adding these checkgate offices are made under section 61 of the Mizoram VAT 2005.

The commissioner further pointed out that the state revenue target was surpassed by Rs 8.35 crore during the 2005-2006 financial owing to the imposition of the VAT in Mizoram since April 2005.

He said, ''This year Mizoram will be able to meet its share of 10 per cent in several centrally funded schemes due to the VAT revenue''.
