Govt must enact new legislation: DIC(K)
Thiruvananthapuram, July 19 (UNI) The Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) DIC(K) today asked the state government to bring in new legislation regarding the self-financing professional colleges in the wake of the High Court allowing the colleges to go ahead with their selection process and collect fees fixed by Justice K T Thomas committee.
Addressing a press conference here, DIC(K) president K Muraleedharan said, '' the court verdict is a setback to the government and it should bring in new legislation after arriving at a consensus with all concerned.'' The government should discuss with the opposition, students' organisations and educationists before arriving at any conclusion, he said and added that the situation would not have arisen if a consensus was evolved earlier.
Asking the government to give more time to the students to register their options, he said the students who had already registered their options would be now rethinking of changing it in the wake of the HC order which had allowed the managements to collect the fees fixed by the K T Thomas committee.
Stating that it was difficult to bring the Professional Colleges Act in the Nineth Schedule of the Constitution, Mr Muraleedharan said the only option before the government was to go for a new legislation.
The government had become non-functional, he said and alleged that the CPI(M), which led the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government, was only having time for party meetings and not for governance.
