Siddaramaiah resigns from Karnataka Assembly
Bangalore, Jul 18: Suspended Janata Dal (S) leader Siddaramaiah resigns from Karnataka Assembly.
Elected from Chamundeshwari constituency in Mysore in the 2004 Assembly elections, Mr Siddaramaiah was the Deputy Chief Minister in the previous Congress-JD(S) coalition Government. Subsequently, he fell out of grace with JD(S) President and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda for attending a conference of backward classes and minorities, held in Hubli last year, despite a party directive against it. He was later suspended from the party for indulging in 'anti-party' activities.
Mr Siddaramaiah had already held two rounds of discussions with Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
The former Deputy Chief Minister had intended to put in his papers last week itself. However, it had got delayed following the Speaker refusing him permission to make a statement on the floor of the House, explaining his move, before tendering his resignation.
The main Opposition Congress members and Mr Siddaramaiah had staged dharnas and walkout in the Assembly, protesting what they termed 'undemocratic' action of the Speaker. Their agitation had disrupted the House proceedings for a couple of days.
