CMI Director honoured with 'Trustee Science Award'

Chennai, July 18 (UNI) Prof C S Seshadri, Director of Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI), has been awarded the ''Trustee Science Award'' for mathematics for the year 2006, in recognition of his pioneering work in the field of Algebraic Geometry.

He is the first Indian Mathematician to receive the coveted award, which was jointly shared with Prof J Palis of Brazil.

The award consists of a cash prize of 50,000 US dollars and a plaque with citation, highlighting the recipients' major contributions.

The award would be presented at a special ceremony at the tenth General Conference of the academy for the Developing world in Brazil in September, a CMI press release here said.

Governed by the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World, Italy, earlier known as Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), this award recognised outstanding scientific achievements made by researchers living and working in developing countries.

A panel of internationally renowned scientists, headed by the president of TWAS, decide the winner after deliberation and this was the first time, the award has been given in the field of Mathematics.
