297 mines abandoned in the country
New Delhi, July 17 (UNI) The Indian Bureau of Mines today declared 297 mines spread over 15 states abandoned on account of being unviable.
The highest number of such mines lies in the state of Madhya Pradesh with 145, followed by 61 in Andhra Pradesh, 24 each in the states of Jharkhand and Tamil Nadu, 11 in Orissa, 6 in Chattisgarh, 5 each in Gujarat and Karnataka, 4 in Maharashtra, 3 in Uttaranchal, 2 each in the states of Goa, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal and one in Kerala, according to the information available from the Indian Bureau of Mines.
The minerals covered under these abandoned mines include Asbestos, Bauxite, Barytes, Chromite, Clay, Ceramic Clay, Copper, Calcite, Chalk, Chaphite, Dolomite, Fellspar, Fireclay, Garnet, Gypsum, Iron, Kyamite, Lime, Lead, Letrite, Mica, Manganese, Orcha, Pyrite, Pyrophyllite, Quartz, Rockphoshate, Sand, Stealite and Zinc.
