England pace bowlers wrap up Pakistan innings

LONDON, July 16 (Reuters) England pace bowlers Steve Harmison and Matthew Hoggard wrapped up the Pakistan first innings for 445 on the fourth morning of the first test at Lord's today to give the home side a lead of 83.

Mohammad Yousuf completed his fourth test double hundred and his second against England before he was the last batsman out for 202.

It was the highest score by a Pakistan batsman at Lord's and his team's total was their largest at the headquarters of world cricket.

At lunch England were 51 for one in their second innings against some accurate bowling from Umar Gul and Mohammad Sami.

Marcus Trescothick, who was dropped on eight by wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal off Gul, was clean bowled by the same bowler for 18 to complete a disappointing match.

When play resumed today Shahid Afridi, who has the second fastest 50 in test cricket, showed his intentions early on another hot, clear day.

He got off the mark with a top edge for four over the slips attempting a hook off Harmison, slashed Hoggard through the covers for another four then played an extraordinary bottom-handed slash off the same bowler to the long off boundary.

Two balls later Hoggard got his revenge when Afridi lofted another attempted boundary hit to Ian Bell at mid-off and was out for 17.

Three balls later Hoggard dismissed Gul caught behind for a duck pushing flat-footed at a full delivery on the off stump.

With Danish Kaneria at the crease Yousuf, who was on 185 overnight, turned down a succession of easy singles to keep the strike and it was soon clear why when Kaneria looked most uncomfortable against the pace bowlers.

He was lucky to escape when he fended a short ball from Hoggard to leg where Liam Plunkett dived but was unable to reach the chance.

Yousuf edged Hoggard past Jones to reach his 200 before edging a simple catch to the wicketkeeper off Harmison.

Jones, whose batting form has slumped with an average of just under 15 in his last 10 innings, completed a sound performance with the gloves with five victims for the fourth time in test cricket.

Harmison, who missed the three-test series against Sri Lanka because of sore shins, finished with four for 94, a just reward for some consistently hostile bowling.
