TISS plans program for tsunami hit Andaman
Port Blair, Jul 13: Tata Institute of Social Science, Mumbai, has planned a series of training programmes for the islanders of tsunami hit Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
"The pass out candidates of our training programme will have the skill to do assessment of the rehabilitation needs and plans," said Prof. Parasuraman, TISS Director, who visited Andaman recently.
He said besides this, they will also be able to identify resources to implement the rehabilitation programme.
The Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, has made significant contribution to policy, planning, action strategies and human resource development in several areas ranging from sustainable rural and urban development in different sectors like education, health, communal harmony, human rights and industrial relation.
Prof. Parasuraman informed that TISS has been working in these Islands since January 2005 when the Institute was involved in enumeration and assessments and at later part, for a study on livelihoods in association with National Institute of Disaster Management, Government of India and University of Pondicherry.
"Two certificate training programmes will be conducted shortly one each in Andamans and Nicobar districts, while 10 short term courses will be organised for government officials as they also need skills in participatory assessment of needs and implementation of projects by involving all concerns," he added.

Prof
Parasuraman
said
that
the
Institute
was
established
way
back
in
1936
as
the
Sir
Dorabji
Tata
Graduate
School
of
social
work
and
later
it
was
renamed
as
Tata
Institute
of
Social
Science
and
recognised
as
deemed
University.
"For
more
than
six
decades,
the
TISS
has
pioneered
in
the
field
of
teaching,
research,
field
action,
training
and
extension
in
areas
viz
sustainable
development,
peoples' participation,
natural
resources
management,
local
self-governance,
application
of
appropriate
technology
and
community
based
self-help
and
micro-credit
group,"
he
added.
Informing about the working pattern of TISS, Prof. Parasuraman said TISS has completed over 600 projects in the last five years alone(2000-2005) which were funded by Centre, besides various state governments, bilateral agencies, United Nations, European Commission, International NGOs and Industries.
"Our focus has been on the disadvantaged and marginalised sections of society that is organised and unorganised labour, women, children, dalits and tribals," he said.
Recently TISS had organised a six-months training programme on sustainable development for the people of Nicobars. The programme was a joint effort of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Andaman and Nicobar Administration and the Action Aid International India.
