Not much headway made in sensational HSBC data theft case
Bangalore, July 13 (UNI) The city police are yet to achieve any major breakthrough in the sensational cyber heist involving data theft from HSBC, leading to siphoning off 2.33 lakh Pounds from the accounts of the multinational bank's UK customers.
The crime came to light with the arrest of an employee of HSBC Data Processing India Ltd (HDPI), a BPO arm of the bank, on June 27 on the charge of passing on data to fraudsters in the UK. The fraudsters had carried out six transactions before the bank was alerted by its customers about missing of funds from their accounts.
Though the cyber crime police suspect involvement of a few others in the fraud in the city, they were yet to make any progress in the case.
The accused, Nadeem Kashmiri, was proving to be a tough nut to crack for the Corps of Detectives (CoD) handling the case. Despite subjecting him to polygraph and brain-mapping tests last week, they were not able to get much information.
CoD Deputy Inspector General (Economic Offences) Sanjay Vir Singh told UNI that they had obtained court permission to subject Kashmiri to narco analysis test. The polygraph test proved that the accused was refusing to come out with the truth.
Mr Singh said a team of CoD officials were likely to visit the UK to gather evidences. The government's permission was awaited in this regard.
