Lucknow, July 13 (UNI) The Uttar Pradesh government today said there was no need to carry out raids against Students' Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) in the state as ''the organisation was not active''.

A home department spokesperson said even if the Centre had directed state governments to carry out raids against underground SIMI activists, UP could not do much ''as there was no activity of the organisation in the state.'' The spokesperson made these remarks hrs after chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav said it was not correct to term all SIMI members as ''terrorists''. He said SIMI's role in Mumbai bomb blasts was being investigated and there was no strong evidences against it.

In May, 2006, the Registrar, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal at Delhi had served notices on 67 persons in Azamgarh, Mau, Sant Ravidas Nagar, Shahjahanpur, Mooradabad, Rampur, Bahraich, Shravasti, Gorakhpur, Sidharthnagar, Gonda and Faizabad.

When SIMI was banned in 2001, 65 cases were pending against the organisation, including forinvolement in the explosion in Sabarmati Express on August 14, 2000 and the murder of ADM (Finance) C P Pathak during riots in Kanpur in 2001.

UP had opposed the ban notice of the Centre sent to the state government on May 22, arguing the organisation was not involved in ''any activities'' and neither had it (UP) received any complaint against SIMI.

The notice was part of overall process to ban SIMI, which was issued by the office of the Registrar, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal at Delhi.
