Major dams receive good inflow, low-lying areas flooded

Bangalore, July 13 (UNI) The Cauvery basin reservoirs in Karnataka continued to receive good inflows following moderate rain in the catchment areas, while low-lying areas in coastal districts were facing flood situation due to the heavy downpour since yesterday.

A report from Mysore said the major Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) reservoir, built across river Cauvery, was almost full today with the water level just two feet short of touching its maximum level of 124.80 ft. The inflow into the dam increased to 10,500 cusecs from 7,000 cusecs yesterday and the discharged was maintained at 4,360 cusecs.

The water level in the Kabini reservoir had crossed the danger mark to touch 2282.28 ft as against its full level of 2,284 ft, forcing the authorities to increase the discharge. The inflow into the dam was 13,646 cusecs and the outflow was increased to 14,472 cusecs.

In the Harangi reservoir, the level was 2856.54 ft as against the maximum level of 2,859 ft. The inflow and out flow was 4,203 and 5175 cusecs respectively.

Meanwhile, widespread rainfall in the undivided Dakshina Kannada district since yesterday resulted in flooding of low-lying areas.

Cultivable lands had also been waterlogged in several places.

The water level in major rivers in the district was slowly raising due to incessant rains.

Reports received here said catchment areas in the ghat section were also receiving widespread rains since yesterday. If the rains continued in the catchment areas, the rivers downstream would be in spate.

Reports of sea erosion were also received from Udyavara-Padukere and Mattu in Udupi district and Ullal in Dakshina Kannada. However, preventive measures had already been taken in these areas by dumping huge boulders, the sources added.

Kundapura recorded the highest rainfall of 10 cms in the last 24 hours ending 0830 hrs, followed by Karkala (eight), Udupi, Mangalore and Puttur (six each), Sullya, Bantwal and Belthangadi (five each).

A report from Bijapur said the water level in the Alamatti dam stood at 517.77m as against its full level of 519.6m. The dam received reduced inflows due to let up in rains. The inflow was 60,961 cusecs and the discharge 46,549 cusecs.
