Customs seizes 26 gunny bags of sea cucumber in TN

Chennai, Jul 13 (UNI) The Customs officials have seized 26 gunny bags of sea cucumber at Vedhalai seashore near Mandapam in Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday last.

According to late reports received by the police headquarters here today, in an surprise raid in the seashore, the customs officials noticed a country-made boat and a group of persons moving around that area in a suspicious manner.

On seeing the customs party, the gang managed to escape from the scene, under cover of darkness. The customs official seized the 810 kgs, weighing sea cucumber valued at Rs 2.75 lakh from the boat.

Preliminary enquiries revealed that the seized sea cucumbers were meant for smuggling out to Sri Lanka.

Further investigations were on, police added.
