Abandoned baby elephant brought to Vandaloor zoo
Chennai, July 13 (UNI) A baby elephant, which had lost its mother due to illness and was abandoned in the forest areas of Hosur in Krishnagiri district, was brought to the Arignar Anna Zoological Park at Vandalur, about 35 km from here, today.
Zoo officials told UNI that the baby jumbo was brought in a truck from Hosur and was kept in quarantine area to study its behaviour.
After a couple of months, the six to twelve- month-old elephant, would be allowed for public view.
The elephant was first spotted by the villagers near Denkanikottai in the Hosur forest range. They treated it well by providing fruits, sugarcanes and coconuts.
On information, forest officials took it back to the forest and released it. There they found a dead elephant. Officials believe that the dead elephant might have been its mother.
As the baby elephant strayed into another village, the forest officials decided to transport it to Vandalur zoo, as letting it out in the wild would once again lead to the animal entering the villages.
This would be the fourth elephant in the Zoo, which already has a 12-year-old female elephant, a seven-year-old male and an eight-month-old 'Chellama, which was brought from Anthiyur forest areas after it got separated from its herd.
