People overpower LeT militant
Srinagar, July 12 (UNI) In a rare case of courage, people overpowered a militant immediately after he threw a hand grenade at Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) which injured six persons, while the CRPF and the police claimed that the arrested militant was a big catch belonging to Pakistan-based outfit Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT).
However, the LeT denied that the outfit was involved in yesterday's grenade blasts on tourists.
Official sources said a group of people, including drivers of the TRC stand, saw a militant running towards Dalgate after hurling a hand grenade towards a vehicle yesterday.
After a long chase, the militant was overpowered by the people and later handed over to police.
This is for the first time that a militant was overpowered by the people.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad had recently appealed to people to rise to the occasion and get the state rid of violence culture forever.
Inspector General of police S M Sahai said the arrested person was Nazir Ahmad Rather, a resident of Sumbal in north Kashmir district of Baramulla.
He said Rather has confessed during the questioning that he and five other militants were responsible for causing series of grenade blasts in the city.
Inspector General of CRPF A P Mahesnwari told UNI that a militant of LeT was arrested before he could throw another grenade immediately after the fifth blast at Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) near here in which six people were injured.
