Govt steps up security at vital spots across the country
New Delhi, July 12 (UNI) The Centre has stepped up security measures at vital and economic installations across the country following yesterday's serial bomb blasts in Mumbai and Srinagar, Home Secretary V.K. Duggal said today.
''This is to prevent any similar attack on centres of vital and economic activity. We'll step up manpower and equipment as part of enhanced security,'' he told reporters after holding a meeting with Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel and senior government officials.
As the death toll in last evening's rose to 183, Mr Duggal said no arrests have been made so far in Mumbai. But in Srinagar, some people have been arrested following vital clues.
''In the recent past, security forces have foiled a large number of attempts by terrorists,'' said Mr Duggal evading a direct question on whether the Centre had any intelligence input on yesterday's terror strikes.
However, he said all security systems are in place and functioning satisfactorily.
Police in Mumbai said 714 persons are being treated in different hospitals.
Mr Duggal said there will be a complete review of the security measures at the airports in a time-bound manner. He said the overall security will be stepped up on top priority basis with special equipment to detect explosives in baggage handling areas.
The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security and Home Ministry will coordinate efforts, he said, adding the the passengers must cooperate with the security officials.
Meanwhile, Mr Patel said the civil aviation ministry will take pro-active measures to prevent any mishap.
