HC orders to submit steps taken by Govt on faremrs suicide
Nagpur, July 11 (UNI) The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court today directed the Maharashtra government to furnish details regarding the relief package, a list of the farmers who had committed suicide and steps taken by it to stop the ongoing suicides by the farmers in Vidarbha.
While hearing the public interest litigation (PIL), filed by Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti president Kisore Tiwari, the bench comprising Justices R M S Khandeparkar and S R Dongaonkar took the serious cognizance of the negligence and failure of the state government to provide timely relief to the farmers, who had committed suicides in the different districts of Vidarbha. So far, 640 farmers had committed suicide since last year.
The High Court accepted the unconditional apology from the respondents including the Maharashatra Government, Chief Secretary and 12 other bureucrats of the secretary-level for their failures, and their prayer to recall the earlier order of imposing cost of Rs 1000 each to be recovered from the respondents with reply affidaviat.
However, it has declined to delete names of these officials from the list of the respondents mentioned in the PIL.
