Famous Urdu poet Qasmi passes away
Islamabad, July 10 (UNI) Renowned Urdu poet and scholar Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi died in Lahore today after a prolonged illness.
Mr Qasmi, who was conferred highest civilian award by the Pakistan government for his invaluable contribution to Urdu literature, was 88.
He was keeping unwell for the past few months and was admitted to a local hospital on Saturday for heart and lung ailments. His condition deteriorated this morning and he was immediately shifted to the Intensive Care Unit(ICU) of the hospital where he breathed his last.
A close associate of Faiz Ahmed Faiz, he was closely linked with progressive movement.
Mr Qasmi edited daily "Imroz" and has written over 50 books on poetry and other forms of Urdu literature.
Sahitya Academy Chief Prof Gopi Chand Narang has expressed grief and sorrow over his death.
''The poet was highly respected and earned name and fame for his writings that left lasting impact on readers,'' said Prof Narang in his condolence message.
