Kathmandu, July 9 (UNI) Nepalese government today presented its annual policies in parliament without the presence of the King for the first time in the country's history.

Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala was also absent due to poor health.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Khadga Prasad Oli presented the government's annual policies and programmes at the House of Representatives.

The government has said that its main task will be to establish sustainable peace in the country in accordance with the aspirations of the people by holding elections to a Constituent Assembly .

''Priorities will be given in establishing peace, including the management of arms, in accordance with the various understandings and agreements reached between the government and Maoists,'' Mr Oli said while addressing the House.

The government also assured that it will launch relief and welfare programmes for rehabilitating the affected families.

He said the government is committed for the development of rural sector and it will provide additional grant for the development of road, electricity, alternative energy, communication services, drinking water and sanitation, health and education services in rural areas.

Earlier, the King used to present the government policies and programmes. The House in its historical announcement decided to keep the King away from parliament.

Parliament was reinstated by King Gyanendra in April after pro-democracy protests in which at least 18 people died, recently stripping the king of his legislative roles and took over his control of the army.
