STUTTGART, July 8 (Reuters) Portugal captain Luis Figo was unexpectedly left out of the starting lineup for today's World Cup match for third place against Germany.

His place was taken by Simao Sabrosa who would play alongside Pauleta up front. Portugal also replaced defender Ricardo Carvalho, who was suspended, with Ricardo Costa.

Right back Miguel, who limped out of Portugal's 1-0 semi-final defeat by France, made way for Paulo Ferreira.

Germany would also be without their captain Michael Ballack through injury and goalkeeper Oliver Kahn would take over as skipper after sitting out the rest of the World Cup on the bench behind first choice Jens Lehmann.

Germany coach Juergen Klinsmann made six changes to his team's lineup, including a last-minute alteration when defender Robert Huth injured his ankle while warming up. Huth was first listed as a starter for the injured Per Mertesacker.

''While warming up Robert Huth suffered a painful injury to his ankle and had to come off,'' the German football association (DFB) said in a statement.

Huth had been listed in the official FIFA starting list.

Klinsmann also brought back midfielder Torsten Frings after being banned by FIFA from Tuesday's semi-final against Italy for attempting to throw a punch after the quarter-final penalty shootout win over Argentina.

Defender Philipp Lahm moved from the left to the right side to come in for injured Arne Friedrich and making room for Marcell Jansen on the left.

Bastian Schweinsteiger was in for Tim Borowski.
