PM to convene Conference of CMs to boost R

New Delhi, July 8 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan today said he would convene a conference of Chief Ministers to improve scientific research and give a boost to science teaching in the country.

With China leaving India fast behind in many frontiers of science, the Prime Minister also vowed to free research institutes from bureaucratic and political intereference.

Dr Singh, who was briefed by the high-level Scientific Advisory Council (SAC) on the status of scientific research and teaching in the country, said the government would take all steps to improve India's competitive position in scientific research.

''The Prime Minister said he would convene a conference of Chief Ministers to discuss issues pertaining to science teaching and research and improvement of higher education in India,'' Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal told reporters after the meeting.

Top scientists like Dr CNR Rao, the chairman of SAC, were present at the meeting that also discussed the sharp decline in India's share in high quality research.

The scientists urged the Prime Minister to increase investment in science and technology for improving research output of universities and scientific research institutions as well as making science a more attractive career option for the youth.

According to Dr Rao, greater professional autonomy was needed for universities and research institutions so that they can take measures to attract more talent and offer better incentives to scientists.

''We need more manpower in IITs and other research institutions,'' said Mr Sibal.
