Maulana Azad's 'Tarjumanul Quran' released

New Delhi, July 8 (UNI) The world famous Urdu translation of the Holy Quran by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, one of India's greatest leaders, is now available in an abridged version.

The 994-page new edition of 'Tarjumanul Quran' was released last evening by former Jamia Millia Islamia vice-chancellor Shahid Mehdi, who praised the translation and explanation of Quranic teaching to help create a broad, humane and cosmopolitan mind.

'Tarjumanul Quran', which Maulana Azad, independent India's first Education Minister, wrote in the 1940s was never completed. It took several years before his scattered works were located to help complete the new abridged version.

The new version has the original Arabic text on the upper portion of every page with the Urdu translation below it. It comes with explanatory notes on each page.

The original 'Tarjumanul Quran' was praised by Arabic scholars as one of the best translations of the Quran. Besides being a freedom fighter and national leader, Maulana Azad was a reverred Arabic scholar, widely known in the Muslim world.

The last 12 paragraphs of the Quran, which was not included in the original 'Tarjumanul Quran', have also been translated and included in the new abridged version.

Work on the Hindi and English translation of 'Tarjumanul Quran' has already started.
