SMC to plant two lakh saplings to create green cover in Surat
Surat, July 7 (UNI) As part of a long-term project to develop a green cover in the city and purify its air, Surat Municipal Corporation has undetaken a drive to plant two lakhs trees in various parts of the city.
SMC sources said that five spots in the city, which cover an area total around 100 hectars, will be selected and the saplings will be planted there.
The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs 1.88 crore and was approved by the standing committee last week. The areas selected for tree plantation are Khosad, Bhesan, Bamroli, Khajod and Sarthana.
Sources said that the trees would be planted as per the Central environment policy, which stipulates the need for urban forestry, especially in highly industrialised cities with a high level of atmospheric pollution.
