Flood warning issued downstream of Kabini dam in Karnataka

Bangalore, July 5 (UNI) A flood warning was today issued downstream of Kabini reservoir near Beechnahalli and authorities have asked people to move to safer places following heavy discharge after incessant rains lashed the catchment areas in Wayanad district of Kerala.

Flood situation prevailed in T Narasipur and Nanjangud 'taluks' as 37,226 cusecs of water was discharged from Kabini reservoir near Beechanahalli. The inflow was 38,295 cusecs and the level was maintained at 2,280.54 ft as against the full level of 2,284 ft.

Reports said large tracts of agricultural land had come under water and a bathing 'ghat' had submerged in Nanjangud.

Meanwhile, the other Cauvery basin reservoirs too continued to receive heavy inflows, which led water levels to go up following heavy rains in the catchment areas in Kodagu district.

The Krishnarajasagar reservoir, built across river Cauvery near here, rose by four feet since yesterday to reach 112.55 ft as against the maximum level of 124.80 ft. The inflow further rose to 44,489 cusecs from 29,824 cusecs yesterday. The outflow was restricted to 482 cusecs.

Heavy discharge continued from Harangi reservoir, which had also reached its full level. The level was 2856.01 ft as against the maximum level of 2859 ft. The outflow was 9,847 cusecs against an inflow of 8,480 cusecs.

BJP state president D V Sadananda Gowda visited Madikeri town, where six people belonging to two families were killed after their houses were razed to the ground in a major landslide yesterday, and spoke to the officials. He also met a 17-year-old girl, who had miraculously escaped, in hospital.

Large tracts of agricultural land remained submerged and normal life was affected in many parts of Kodagu district. Residents of Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu districts, however, heaved a sigh of relief as there was some let up in rainfall in the day.

In Belgaum, flood situation continued with Malaprabha, Ghataprabha and Hiranyakeshi, all tributaries of river Krishna, overflowing. However, the situation was under control as the water level in the rivers had not reached the danger mark.
