Uttar Pradesh has highest Scheduled Caste population
New Delhi, July 4 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh has the largest number of people belonging to Scheduled Castes in the country at 3.51 crore, which is nearly twice that of West Bengal that comes second.
According to the 2001 Census figures, the total population of Scheduled Castes in the country is 16.6 crore. Uttar Pradesh is followed by West Bengal with 1.84 crore and Bihar with 1.30 crore.
The Labour and Employment Ministry, which released the figures today, said Andhra Pradesh has a Scheduled Caste population of 1.23 crore and Tamil Nadu at 1.18 crore.
There is no Scheduled Caste population in Nagaland, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshwadeep.
The lowest Scheduled Caste population is in Mizoram (272).
